WHAT IS A MENTAL HEALTH COACH?
Mental health coaching helps clients envision life without depression or other obstacles to emotional well-being. It is a niche within the coaching field which touches on therapy, but it does not work with or attempt to treat mental illness. Coaches in this niche don’t view mental health in terms of illness or psychological problems; they view it as an issue needing life goals clarification and identification, support and guidance, behavior modification, and life skills training.
These are the main areas on which mental health coaches work:
- Identifying, clarifying, and defining goals.
- Creating a plan that will use the client’s skills and strengths to reach those goals.
- Holding the client accountable for progress and achievement of those goals.
- Providing structure, inspiration, guidance, motivation, and support.
WHO SHOULD HIRE A MENTAL HEALTH COACH?
Mental Health Coaching is a cognitive and behavioral form of strengths-based support for adults living with mental health difficulties and disorders. Mental Health Coaching is action oriented with an emphasis on improving one’s present life and reaching goals for the future. Mental health coaches use a partnership model wherein the client is an active participant in their own recovery plan, the one who decides what is worth doing, while the coach provides expertise in supporting successful change and accountability to help the client stay on track.
In this mental health coaching program, my clients will learn ways to develop a healthy balance in their life, they would be given guidance in decision making, offered support in navigating mental health difficulties, and as a mental health coach i assist my clients in establishing a recovery plan. We help clients to find ways of obtaining and maintaining stability, managing difficult symptoms, rebuilding relationships, finding purpose for living by creating a clear plan of action, and using current strengths to reach future goals.
